Severn Classical Tutorial
Policies and Regulations

Enrollment Policy

Homeschool High School Students who meet the following requirements may seek enrollment:

q       Students must have been homeschooled under their parent’s direct supervision for at least one year. (This is to ensure that the student understands their personal responsibilities as homeschoolers, and that the home school is prepared to adapt to the tutorial environment).

q       Students or student families must have access to email and Internet web pages to obtain assignments, notifications, and complete some homework assignments, i.e. reading articles online and/or conducting research. This is to simplify communication between the board, teachers, and students.

q       Students and their parents must agree to (and sign) the Severn Classical Tutorial Statement of Faith and Policies & Regulations.

q       Students must be active participants in a local church as confirmed by pastor/elder/leader.

Refund Policy

q   Application fee is non-refundable upon acceptance to the tutorial.

q   Class fees are non-refundable.  SCT enters into contract agreements with tutors based upon registration figures.  In order to honor our contracts with tutors, class fees will be collected and paid to the tutor regardless of student withdraw.  Please carefully consider your student's situation before your register for classes.

Classroom Policy

q       The tutor is in charge of the learning environment; students are expected to respect the tutor and may not challenge his/her authority.

q       Food and chewing gum are not permitted in the classrooms.

q       Student's may not wear coats or jackets in the classroom.

q       Only registered students or their visiting parents/guardian may attend tutorial classes, study hall, and lunch period.  Prospective students may schedule class visitation.

Communication Policy

q       Parents should seek to resolve classroom concerns with tutors first and the board second.

q       If the parent contacts the tutor and the problem is unresolved, the board will work with the tutor until the issue is resolved.

Study Hall Policy

q       The Study Hall is a service of convenience for Tutorial families and students are expected to "study" during this time period.  Students may not play cards or other games during study hall.

q       Eating is not allowed during study hall, except for during the lunch period.

q       A student may study with another classmate provided they whisper and are not distracting to others.

q       Unless students have written permission to the contrary from a parent or guardian, students must remain on the grounds of Severn Covenant Church from the start of their first tutorial class to the end of their last tutorial class. The study hall monitor enforces this policy.

q       If a student is distracting to others during study hall, the student will be verbally warned once.  If the student continues to be distracting, a corrective action notice will be sent home.  Repeat offenders may lose their study hall privilege and/or be suspended at the discretion of the board.

Lunch Policy

q    The Study Hall will also serve as the lunch room from 11:40am -12:15pm.  Weather permitting and at the discretion of the study hall monitor, students may be permitted to have lunch in designated areas outside.

q    Students must clean up after themselves and get to their next class/study hall period on time.

q    Due to the short time allotted for lunch, students may not leave the Tutorial during the lunch period.

Homework Policy

q       The Tutor will provide homework assignments for non-tutorial days (M-W-F) via email.

q        Each daily assignment should require approximately 1 hour to complete per class.

q        It is the student's responsibility to complete each assignment on time and come prepared for class.

q     The policy for late homework assignments is as follows:

-          First missing or late assignment of the year: Student warned verbally by tutor, but no penalty given.

-       Thereafter, if a student is late with an assignment, the tutor will accept the assignment on the very next tutorial day; however, there will be a penalty for the late work. The tutor will mark down the assignment by one letter grade for the lateness.

-          Tutors will not accept assignments past the one day grace period and the student will receive a zero in the tutor’s grading record.  In addition, tutors will not be permitted to change a recorded grade at a parent’s request.  Note: It is the parent’s responsibility to assign final class grades.

-     Students who consistently disregard assigned work (defined by 3 or more missing or late assignments) may be suspended or expelled at the discretion of the board.

The only exception to this policy is for the parent to contact the tutor in advance and ask for an extension due to sickness or family travel.

Stewardship policy while on Tutorial Grounds

q       As guests of the Severn Covenant Church, students are responsible for the care and good stewardship of the church building.  Students are expected to clean up after themselves in class and at lunch.

q       As guests of the Severn Covenant Church, we do not want to burden the church secretary or tie up their phone lines. Therefore, please do not call Severn Covenant Church for tutorial business or to contact your student. An emergency phone number will be provided on our website once classes begin.

q      Chewing gum is not allowed on Tutorial grounds.

q      Tutorial designated areas are the classrooms, bathrooms, study hall, and outside recreational area (during lunch only). During class periods, students are to remain in the class rooms or in study hall. During lunch period, students are to be in study hall or outside in the designated recreational areas.  Students are not permitted in the class rooms during lunch.

q      To limit the distraction to the church offices, students must enter and exit the church building through the side entrance. (opposite the playground)

Discipline Policy

q       The tutor will carry out the majority of day-to-day discipline. However, there may be  instances where a stronger warning or more severe penalty is needed. The following offenses will automatically necessitate such action:

        - Continual disregard for policies

        - Fighting (i.e., striking in anger with the intention to harm another)

        - Unkind, obscene, vulgar, or profane language, as well as taking the Lord's name in vain.

q        If any of the above actions occur, the following process will be followed

First offense:  Formal verbal warning to student

Second offense during same class period: Student will be sent to study hall for the remainder of class, and parent will be notified that evening.

Sent to Study Hall three times in an academic year for disrupting class – Student expelled for the remainder of the year (no fees will be refunded).

The board will normally follow the above protocol. In cases where change is evident and the student appears repentant, exceptions are possible. The board will determine if an exception is to be made.
